ABORTION 12-19 WEEKS GESTATION
In the first trimester the entire abortion process can be done in one appointment day.
The first day includes ultrasound, counseling and lab work. There is an exam with the doctor, during which cervical dilators called Laminaria are inserted into the cervical opening. How many depends on gestation.
Due to the gestational difference between a first and second trimester pregnancy, the 2nd trimester general anesthesia procedure may take about 5-10 minutes longer than a 1st trimester procedure. A woman undergoing this procedure could be asleep for 10-25 minutes.

An abortion does not affect your fertility or ability to get pregnant. You can become pregnancy as soon as the evening of your abortion if you are not using birth control. If you choose to start birth control, you should begin it the first Sunday after your procedure, or as directed by your physician. Your after care packet will include 1 or 2 samples (should we have them on hand), a prescription for more and a birth control info sheet noting the day birth control should be started. You can fill your prescription at any pharmacy, and see you primary care physician or gynecologist for more. Be sure to use a back-up method the first month you are on birth control.
